First Step now offering College Placement Assistance

Through a host of activities and services, the First Step Placement Program provides the exposure and personal connection required to get prospective student-athletes introduced to college coaches and recruited at the appropriate level of competition; thereby enhancing their opportunity to receive athletic or scholastic aid at a college or university that best meets their athletic and academic goals.

Keep you mind focused on your game, your skills and your goals whether they be personal or team goals. Do not use your energy focusing on the negative aspects of your teammates level of play, the referees or opponents, as soon as you focus on them you've lost your path to success. To distinguish yourself, you need to continue to elevate your personal expectations and discipline – this goes for the grades you receive in class or how you perform on the court. Expect more from yourself and concentrate on meeting your goals – don’t worry about what others are doing. In addition to hurting your development, it will show a great deal of class not to criticize others.

Be a class act!

"It is ridiculous for any man to criticize the works of another if he has not distinguished himself by his own performance." Robert Browning

Types of First Step

Open Step: For short distances and quick movements, your lead foot will step out while you push off with your back foot.

Crossover Power Step: When you have to reach a great distance, this is the one to use. Your lead foot stays and your back foot crosses over it. You push off with your lead foot.

Jab Step: For quick reaction and shorter distances, your lead foot can actually move backward relative to your center of gravity, then push off with your back foot.

Drop Step: When you need to move backwards or diagonally backwards, your lead foot moves back and you push off with your back foot.

Your first step is the one that can make the move or allow the defender to anticipate your movement. Proper knowledge of your center of gravity and those defending you will help you to catch them off guard. Often a good first step is all you need to stay a step head of them and make the play.
